Brascoe Publishing, a young and enthusiastic independent press in Adelaide, has teamed up with Arts Hub Australia to provide a special member offer.
The Brascoe ethos is based on a solid foundation of creative and professional writer development. The discount to financial members of Arts Hub Australia, resident both here and in New Zealand, acknowledges the role that Arts Hub plays in supporting the Arts community Australia-wide.
Brascoe Publishing is therefore providing 10% off all manuscript development and mentoring services to Arts Hub members. The house is also currently in talks with Arts Hub to see what other member benefits they can collectively provide in future.
‘We see the partnership with Arts Hub as a solid strategic move,’ commented Brascoe Publishing partner Leticia Supple this week. ‘We know that Arts Hub enjoys an unprecedented position in Australia’s arts community, as a meeting place, and forum for businesses, creative organisations, and individuals. The special offer we’re providing allows Arts Hub to provide even more benefits to its writer community. Perhaps more importantly, it allows Brascoe to gain a stronger foothold nationally as a provider of much-needed services to the Arts.’
The manuscript development and mentoring service that Brascoe Publishing is offering to Arts Hub members provides a writer with the opportunity to have his or her manuscript assessed by a professional editorial team, with appropriate feedback. It provides for a mentoring-style relationship for the duration of the manuscript development, and it also provides time for meetings and discussions about how the manuscript could be adapted, improved, or polished.
Unlike standard manuscript appraisals, the Brascoe manuscript service is a purely developmental tool. It does not appraise a manuscript for publishability, thereby filling a gap left behind by major presses that can no longer establish professional development relationships with their writers.
It is for this reason that the Brascoe assessment can be applied to any type of manuscript, from notes or first drafts to polished works.
‘We like to think about our manuscript and writer development service as being like a miniature Mentoring Retreat that is not competitive, and that is available all year round,’ Leticia said. ‘We believe that writers need continual access to a cost-effective, useful development service, and so we offer it to them. So far we’ve had excellent feedback from writers near and far.’
