It’s rare caravan tyres wear out. Left to bear the weight of the caravan for long periods in the same position however, tyres can become distorted. And tyres that remain under inflated for long periods can suffer cracking of the sidewalls.
Damaged tyres can result in blowouts, often the cause of hundreds of caravan write offs each year.

Sarah Jones, Claims Liason Manager of Caravan Guard comments, “Our claim statistics have traditionally shown a sharp increase in blowout incidents in summer months especially following a cool or wet summer in the previous year. Based on previous experience we believe that we could see up to 55% more caravan tyre blowouts on our roads than last summer.”
Caravan Guard are advising all caravanners to check their tyres before setting off on their summer trips. Jones comments, “Best advice is to check for signs of damage such as cuts or sidewall cracking at both sides of each tyre. Of course, annual caravan servicing could pick up such problems. It’s worth considering replacing tyres if you know they are over 5 years old regardless of tread depth. Also it goes without saying that you should check pressures for tyres on both caravan and your towing vehicle.”
