Jun 12, 2008 – Brian J. Morris, Ph.D., D.Sc., is a professor of molecular medical sciences for the School of Medical Sciences and Bosch Institute. He has been in this capacity for three decades and is responsible for overseeing the basic and clinical genomics laboratory which directs its research to the molecular basis of ageing, cardiovascular disease and cancer. Specifically, they engage in research to discover the regulation of renin gene expression at the transcriptional and post-transcriptional level, how splicing factors control alternative splicing of pre-mRNA and genome-wide alterations in gene expression during aging of human cells and the effect of resveratrol on this process. The lab also has a long-standing interest in human papillomavirus in cervical screening. Dr. Morris graduated with first class Honors in science from the University of Adelaide, South Australia and completed his Ph.D. in the department of medicine at Monash and Melbourne Universities. He was awarded a CJ Martin fellowship by the NHMRC to further his studies in the U.S. at the University of Missouri, Columbia and the University of California, San Francisco. During his second year at the latter he was an advanced fellow of the American Heart Association then returned to Australia to take up a lectureship in with the department of physiology at the University of Sydney and set up the first recombinant DNA laboratory on campus. Additionally, he received a D.Sc. for his contributions to molecular studies of hypertension. Dr. Morris’ awards include the Edgeworth David Medal for Science and the Faculty of Medicine Award for Excellence in Postgraduate Research Supervision. He is a fellow of the American Heart Association, a member of the editorial board of two premier journals in hypertension, Hypertension and Journal of Hypertension, has authored over two hundred and fifty publications and his research has led to the earliest priority date for use of PCR in human papillomavirus detection for cervical screening, U.S., European and Australian patents awarded and is currently being commercialized by Polartechnics Ltd, an ASX company that purchased the patent portfolio and that he is a consultant for. Dr. Morris’ accomplishments are innumerable. In addition to his professional achievements, he has maintained an active agenda of personal and altruistic undertakings that are equally impressive. In his spare time, Dr. Morris enjoys working out in the gym, reading and being with family.
