The Story of Broadway Told Through Historic Photographs

With 240 evocative photographs culled exclusively from the acclaimed Billy Rose Theatre Division, the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts, Historic Photos of Broadway: New York Theater, 1850–1970 is a comprehensive survey of the Great White Way.

Featuring text by New York critic Leonard Jacobs, Historic Photos of Broadway offers incomparable images of the great plays and players of the 19th and 20th centuries. From long-forgotten tragedians and comedians to the musicals of the Gershwins, Porter, Rodgers and Hammerstein and Sondheim, to the dramas of O’Neill, Miller, Inge, Williams and Albee, Broadway glitters through glorious, large-format photography. Many photographs are being published for the first time in this volume.

There are priceless images of Broadway stars—the Barrymores, the Lunts, Katharine Hepburn, Ethel Merman, Marlon Brando, Carol Channing—and scores of photographs of Broadway theaters—such as the Lyceum, Longacre, New Amsterdam, Winter Garden, Imperial, Golden, Morosco, and Music Box.

“It’s a misconception that there’s no dynamic between the Broadway of the 19th and 20th centuries,” says author Jacobs. “For every My Fair Lady, West Side Story, A Streetcar Named Desire or Death of a Salesman, there are amazing images in the Billy Rose collection that open us up to the Broadway of yesteryear. This book represents just 240 of the best images we discovered.”

Historic Photos of Broadway is part of Turner Publishing’s Historic Photos series. Highlighting the history of great cities, legendary places, and pivotal events across the globe, these books have been acclaimed as a staple in the collection of anyone who loves history.
