About Atoms to Suns:
Atoms to Suns is a NYC-based band focused on creating dark atmospheric rock, soaked in elements of dub - think a mix of Mezzanine-era Massive Attack and Sigur Ros, with King Tubby at the mixing desk. ATS began in the fall of 2005 as a songwriting and recording partnership between Maria Estrella and Michael Derby. Estrella sang, while Derby handled instruments, programming and production. "Red Curtain" is the result.
"All the songs on the CD are probably the most heartfelt material I've written so far," Estrella said. The songs "were written during a time in my life when there were big changes going on and I was trying to figure out a way to deal with them," she said. "It's great to be able to go back and listen to these songs and remember your inspiration whether it be love, tears of happiness or joy, and to know you've made it through some rough times and know you are stronger now."
For Derby, the path towards Atoms to Suns involved a transformation from playing bass in a series of unlamented East Coast bands to becoming a multi-instrumentalist and producer. "I like challenges, and I don't like to repeat what I've already done," Derby said. Having started out in a Sonic Youth inspired outfit in Baltimore before moving on to avant garde violin-bass-
Atoms to Suns' line up expanded as the band took steps to playing live in the spring of 2007. Juan Mora, a veteran and versatile percussionist, joined on drums in fall 2006. Texas native and recent New York transplant Johnny Green joined on bass in fall 2007. Mora and Green have helped translate the band's sound from the studio to a powerful live machine, and will be active participants in what Atoms to Suns creates in the future.
