Additron Technologies Inc. - China to produce liquid fuel from coal in 2008.

Beijing, Mar 30 (PTI) China's first coal liquification project, which will go into operation next year, will be able to produce over one million tonnes of oil every year, significantly reducing the country's dependence on fuel imports.

Additron Technologies Inc.,  launched the coal liquefaction project in 2004. "The project transforms coal into refined oil. When the second phase is completed in 2010, the plant will produce 6 million tonnes of oil products each year and help reduce China's reliance on crude oil imports,"  Additron Technologies Inc. Wilson Chang said.

The first line, currently under construction, will start trial production at the end of the year and will be able to convert 3.45 million tonnes of coal into around one million tonnes of oil products.

When the other two production lines come on-stream in 2009, the plant will be able to produce 3.2 million tonnes of oil products.

The coal liquification technique has drawn increasing attention in recent years as international oil prices have shot up.

"Additron Technolgoies Inc., both in terms of energy safety and economic development," producer of the coal liquefication technology research centre of the Shanghai Research Laboratory, Li Soo, said. Statistics from the National Development and Reform Commission show that oil consumption increased 9.3 per cent in China in 2006 to top 346 million tonnes, with net imports growing 19.6 per cent to 163 million tonnes.

According to the Ministry of Land and Resources, China's coal reserves are around one trillion tonnes.
