Los Altos, CA – What are the secrets to applying to college and what are the biggest mistakes that students make when apply?

“While your future may hang in their hands, college admissions offices are actually highly orchestrated, unregulated marketing campaigns built on the padded stats of those applications,” Nathan Allen, former college admissions consultant and executive director of the Princeton Review, explains this and the secrets of being a savvy applicant when he hosts a free open forum for area parents and students.

Allen, who has consulted for college admissions and marketing departments, including 22 of The US News & World Report Top 25, is the best-selling author and contributing media expert on the college admissions topic.

The changes in the college admissions process prompted Allen to open the area’s Andover College Prep education and counseling offices for students through the area. “What I learned in consulting and my years at the Princeton Review prompted me to host different seminars to educate parents and students about the process. It isn’t as cut and dry as people might think. Particularly now as more and more colleges are allowing SAT score-optional in the applications, it is opening the door for even greater fluctuations in factors to determine acceptance or rejections,” Allen stated.

In an open forum discussion, Allen will address concerns of parents and students; and provide the answers to the short-term and longer-term actions that will have a tremendous impact for some applicants. “There are simple ‘Dos and Don’ts’ that can filter the applications immediately. The newer SAT optional application sounds great for ‘students that don’t test well,’ but it also means even greater competition. This year’s junior class is already a major bubble class. Universities will now be able to increase its athletic and fine art talent acceptance while maintaining an extremely high level SAT entrance score because they will not factor all of the scores. Applications will have to be extra-ordinary”

Timed for peak interest as high school juniors are taking the SAT and ACT exams throughout the area, Allen says his seminar is “…a major wake-up call for students and parents.” Each free seminar is approximately 90 minutes.

Nathan Allen has been published or profiled in many magazines including Seventeen, Beautiful Girl, Teen People, Today’s Parent, PREP, and the Chronicle of Higher Education. GRE was published in 2007. For many years, Nathan was a leading consultant to college admissions and marketing departments (including 22 of the US News Top 25 national universities).
