Music industry analyst Michael Wood who is also the author of the music business guide "You've Got A Friend In The 'Biz" joined the national broadcast of Canada AM (June 6, 2008) to discuss a brewing controversy surrounding the CBC's plan to not renew the theme song for Hockey Night In Canada.
There is currently the proposal to not renew the license for the theme that many Canadians refer to as their second national anthem. The controversy is based around a $500.00 dollar licensing fee of the song per broadcast and the sale of the very popular ringtone version which is reportedly has sales upwards of two million dollars. "The song is synonymous with Saturday nights and our national fabric", says Wood. Wood goes on to say that "this is a theme song that has had not only families, but cities and the entire country crowd around their radios and television sets for almost forty years. It evokes the emotional "game time" sentiment amongst Canadians sitting down to cheer on their favorite team and signifies the start of the start of some of the best rivalries in professional sports".
The song that was written 39 years ago by composer Dolores Claman who now resides in England.
