"Buying this book serves a double purpose," says Clark. "Kids get practical ideas on how to volunteer and hopefully the book sales will provide some royalties to pay for my college!" After seeing Oprah's reality show, The Big Give, many families are inspired to volunteer, but don't know what to do. This book is a helpful resource.
Clark knows firsthand the value of volunteering. She's worked with children in Kenya, Uganda, Mexico and Peru, distributing food and essential supplies. "I know not everyone can volunteer overseas. But everyone can volunteer in their own community by using some of the ideas in 77 Creative Ways Kids Can Serve", says Clark.
Some of the projects in her book include:
• Decorate lunch bags with stickers and glitter. Add a granola bar, juice pack and small "Happy Meal" type toy. Deliver to a shelter as a Bedtime Snack Sack for homeless children.
• Collect newspapers to donate to the local animal shelter for puppy pens.
• Make easy, no-sew fleece lap blankets for nursing home residents.
• Ask family and friends to donate gently used shoes to Soles4souls. This non-profit agency then ships shoes to people in need overseas.
Clark plans on attending Baylor University in Texas. With a hefty tuition, she's looking at part time jobs and royalties from her book to help finance her education. "This is a win-win situation," states Clark. "People can buy the book on Amazon or for multiple copies, contact Joe Jackson at Wesleyan Publishing, jacksonj@wesleyan.org 317-774-
As summer approaches, kids have more free time to volunteer. Purchasing copies of 77 Creative Ways Kids Can Serve provides simple project directions so kids can help other people, animals or the environment. Plus you'll help send a deserving student to college! http://www.sondraclark.com
