Students from the Academy at Sisters, http://www.academyatsisters.org, volunteer at Blissful Acres Rescue Reserve (BARR), http://www.blissfulacres.com, caring for 26 formally abused horses that have been neglected or given up by the original owners.  The student’s clean, brush, feed and bond with these animals and also nurture an animal in need.  This is one of many ways that the girls at The Academy at Sisters volunteer their time in the community.

Pam Addington, Founder of Healing Reins Therapeutic Riding Center www.healingreins.org/ , in Bend, Oregon remarked how wonderful this activity is for the girls, “The human animal bond is the factor that can lead to emotional as well as physical healing.  Horses mirror back our fears and joys and help us to understand our daily lives.  For an adolescent confused about life, being around and working with horses is freedom from their everyday problems.  Horses can be our teachers in many ways and the benefits of this partnership are many - improved self-esteem, empathy for another living creature, improved motor skills, better problem solving skills and an overall feeling of well-being and confidence.”

The Academy also has a related Equestrian Program, http://www.academyatsisters.org/equestrian-boarding-schoo... , located at their Read Campus in Bend, Oregon.  The program is designed to compliment the Academy at Sisters’ Personal Growth Program and provides metaphors of therapeutic value.  These equine activities have proven to improve communication skills and build confidence.
