Askin Ozcan, a resident of Stockholm, Sweden, is a new, popular author of five titles published in the U.S.A. His recently published book " STOCKHOLM STORIES " is sold globally on 200 internet bookshops and via 25000 bookstores, upon giving its ISBN.
As there are over ten million titles, in English, in the market, it is impossible for a bookstore to carry all the books available in the market. One buys therefore either
from the internet bookshops or orders the books at a local bookstore, by giving their
ISBN. Bookstores choose the books they wish to have on their shelves, according to
their marketability. But, this is not all. Sometimes books that would be popular in a local market, can not be placed on the shelves of the local bookstores, for a technical conflict in the literary market. Some publishers give the books to the bookstores on credit, others demand cash payment and do not extend a credit to the bookstores,
although both use the same global book distributors.
Askin Ozcan's " STOCKHOLM STORIES " is one such example. It is a very fine book of memoirs, unbiased and with very interesting and exciting content, which relates the life in Stockholm, analyzes the changes which took place in it in a time span of thirty years;
gives an account of the life of the author in it, in detail; lists the interesting places in
Stockholm and touches on the diverse issues of politics, city's problems, social life, racism and climate and is a good read of 104 pages. Although it sells well on
www.adlibris.se , www.bn.com, www.amazon.com and other internet bookshops, author Askin Ozcan has been unable
to introduce the book to the Stockholm public in the Stockholm bookstores, because
the book's publisher Xlibris sells only on cash basis (and with very generous trade discount) and bookstores buy only on credit. STOCKHOLM STORIES is distributed globally by Ingrams, the world's largest book wholesaler.
The other books of Askin Ozcan have been the victim of the same problem.
THE SECOND VENICE, for example (ISBN 1598000888 - Outskirts Press) is an outstanding book of humorous fantasy, which became No.1 among the top rated books in Italy Magazine, last year and received excellent reviews in the U.S.A., U.K. ,
Italy and Turkey. Although the bookstores in Venice and for that matter in entire Italy, would like to carry the book on their shelves, their inability to buy the book on cash basis from the publisher or the world distributor, makes it impossible for them to have this unique book of humorous fantasy on their shelves.
" SMALL MIRACLES" ( ISBN 1598001000 - Outskirts Press) which was well received by H.H. The Pope Benedictus XVI and " WISDOM IN SMILE " (ISBN 142577153X - Xlibris),
a collection of short stories which received excellent critique at the City Chic Magazine, N:Y, or the " LIGHTNING AND A BOUQUET OF ROSES" (ISBN 1424111870- Publish America), a poetry collection where two poems received "The Best Poem of 2006" award at Muses Review, are all the victims of the same problem and are sold successfully on the internet shops but can not make for their deserved places on the bookshelves of the bookstores in many countries.
Askin Ozcan, however, is not the only author who suffers this problem. Many worthwhile authors whose books are published by equally reliable publishers,
don't see their books on the bookshelves of bookstores and can sell only via
internet bookshops.
