There are many ships and itineraries to choose from and the choices keep increasing as the Port of Los Angeles undergoes a major initiative to “green” the port.
The Port of Los Angeles is well under way to clean up its act and the cruise lines will need to comply. "By the end of the year, we hope to have the facilities in place to plug in cruise ships, like in Alaska. This eliminates one ton of emissions from the air each day. We have a goal on the percentage of ships that will plug in, but it won't be 100 percent for years" commented Theresa Adams Lopez , Director of Media Relations for the Port of Los Angeles
With stricter guidelines in place the cruise lines will need to retrofit older ships or send newer ships to the port. The Port plans on building a new pier as well that will allow larger vessels to dock in deeper water. Both of these improvements equate to new and fresher choices to Southern California residents. Royal Caribbean will move the Monarch of the Sea to Port Canaveral Florida to do 3 and 4 day cruises.
