Sprucing up our homes is a national pastime and with two Bank Holidays almost upon us, you can bet your paintbrush or lawnmower that many of us will be spending time doing jobs in the house or garden.

Changing your window dressing can make a big difference to the way your home looks by helping to update its look and banish those post-winter blues. It can also be a relatively inexpensive way to breathe fresh life into a room, as long as you don’t make any costly mistakes by getting the measurements wrong, if you plan to fit the blinds yourself.

If so, here are a few pointers from web-blinds.com, the UK’s largest online supplier of made to measure blinds:

1.   First of all, check you’ve got the right tools for the job – notebook, pencil and a tape measure.

2.   Then decide if you want your blind to hang inside the window recess or on the outside of the window frame

3.   If you want the blind to fit snugly into the recess then you need to take three measurements across the width of the window from wall to wall at roughly equal intervals. Then, again in three places, measure from the top of the recess to the windowsill. (This is because many windows are not actually a uniform shape from top to bottom and side to side, especially in older houses.)

4.   In each case make a note of the shortest measurement, as that’s the one that will be used.

5.   If, however, you want your blind to hang over the window you’ll have to measure the exact size you want it and the blind will be made without adjustment. Here you need to make a note of the measurement of both width and drop.

Web-blinds require measurements in centimetres but don’t worry if you prefer to do them in inches as our web-site has a handy converter!

How to fit a blind

1.   Just like baking a cake it’s a good idea to get all your ‘ingredients’ ready before you start – this ensures a smooth job. So gather the tools – power drill and drill bit, screwdriver and a pencil. Unpack the blind, fixtures, fittings and instructions.

2.   Decide exactly where the blind is to be fitted and position it, mark the drill holes with a pencil, these are usually about 15cms from each end of the blind. Obviously if the blind is very wide it will need more brackets and therefore more holes will need to be drilled.

3.   Once you’ve drilled the holes, screw the brackets in place using the rawl plugs and screws provided. Now fit your blind into the brackets – it really is as simple as that!
