Action Novel Reveals True Way of the Ninja

Bloomington, IN. (May 21, 2008)—While summer blockbusters pay homage to superheroes with unbelievable powers, the reality is that secretive warriors with seemingly supernatural abilities exist among everyday people. They are ninjas, skilled in an ancient, deadly art. The Dark Angel immerses readers in the shadowy world of Ninjutsu in a tale that tackles cogent topics, from terrorism to socioeconomics to the plight of public schools.

The Dark Angel follows the troubled lives of two teens whose worlds suddenly collide. Brian Scott is an outcast high school student who struggles within a family ripped apart by tragedy. A self-proclaimed loser, Brian has no idea what is in store for him when he meets Jason Patrick, the mysterious new arrival at Summerfield High School. Kind-hearted, intelligent, and seemingly one step ahead of everyone, Jason actually lives the way of the ninja. Hiding his true identity, Tomonori Shimada, he is undercover at this Florida school to uncover a sinister plot and avenge the death of his sensei. As Jason and Brian grow closer, Brian cannot help but follow his friend’s treacherous path and discovers he is capable of much more than he ever imagined.

The plot unfolds in a tapestry of friendship and betrayal, exposing terrorist schemes and implicating enemies in unlikely places. Readers follow Tomonori in pursuit of the evil that impacted his life and made him a fugitive. No one can be trusted, save the few loyal connections from his past and the new friends he makes at Summerfield High. From upstate New York to the Florida peninsula to the nation’s capital, deadly encounters and clandestine meetings mark the perilous journey of Tomonori and everyone he comes to know.

Throughout the novel, Haynes tugs at the gnawing fear of terrorism within America’s borders and explores the growing clash of socioeconomic classes where it often hurts most—in the merciless hallways of high schools. He also draws from extensive knowledge as a student of Bujinkan, a system of martial arts that includes Ninjutsu, Samurai, and other traditions, to offer a realistic portrayal of the discipline, skill, and honor of the ninja.
