FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PRLog (Press Release)May 21, 2008 – After months of development sustainable business expert and
http://www.envirowise.gov.uk/193790  environmental agency  Envirowise is calling on UK businesses to try its new web-based environmental impact measurement tool.

The Envirowise Indicator, which has been pre-launch tested by companies as diverse as Champneys Health Resorts and National Grid, will allow all UK businesses, irrespective of their size or industry sector, to gain a useful indication of their company’s environmental impact and the potential financial savings that can be made by reducing it.

(If you are interested see our latest http://www.envirowise.gov.uk/167255 environmental case study and information about http://www.envirowise.gov.uk/188575 water legislation)

The Indicator comes pre-loaded with resource and waste costs across six of the UK’s largest sectors including office, retail, food and drink, manufacturing, chemicals and construction. Alternatively, companies can input their own data on materials used and waste volumes produced if they have this information to hand. They can then make amendments to the figures online to see the resulting financial and environmental impacts.

According to a recent survey1 74 per cent of 200 European companies questioned were not sure how to measure their environmental impact. This tool will help them do just that, claims Envirowise, as well as pointing them in the direction of relevant parts of the huge bank of resource efficiency advice Envirowise already has available.

Commenting on the launch of the Indicator, business partnership manager Simon Drury said: “Envirowise aims to put the sustainable use of resources at the heart of UK business. There are several eco indicator and calculator tools out there but ours analyses the full picture by considering resource inputs and resulting waste volumes. By using the Indicator, businesses will be able to better understand their own environmental impact and the potential savings they can make.”

Businesses that have trialled the Indicator have given positive feedback, along with a few suggestions for improvement. As Marta Gorska of London Recyling Limited commented: “The Indicator is very straight forward, and the pre-loaded cost information was helpful as our offices are located across four sites, all with separate metering systems. We would definitely recommend this, especially for anyone who’s not clear on their environmental impact or who have limited time or resources. It’s a good starting point for improving environmental practice.”

Companies can access the tool online at www.envirowise.gov.uk/indicator.

Envirowise offers free advice to all companies throughout the UK to help them understand effective resource management and how to take action accordingly. For more information visit www.envirowise.gov.uk or call free-phone on 0800 585794 and check out the latest environmental legislation.
