The first phase of The Amazing You will give guests vast insight into the beginning of life, childhood, and adolescence life stages. Within the exhibition, guests will explore what’s amazing about each developmental life stage and learn what it takes to stay healthy at each stage and how to return to wellness after an illness, surgery or a disability. Guests will also learn about medical conditions and diseases which are most prevalent during each specific developmental stage of life.
The Beginning of Life stage covers the “miracle” of human beginnings – when life creates life, and the common experience of coming into the world. In this section, guests can view a fetus with a whole new perspective by interacting with a simulated fetal ultrasound or experiencing “the outside world” from a fetus’ point of view and even try on a pregnancy suit for size.
The Childhood stage covers common bodily functions including topics like digestion, germs, and the senses – sight, smell, hearing, touch, and taste. Guests can interact with exhibits in this stage by taking an advanced hearing test, looking through microscopes, participating in a large scale version of the classic “Operation”
The Adolescence life stage explores topics such as sexual maturation, body image, peer pressure, risky behavior as well as drug and alcohol abuse. Activities include the Sexually Transmitted Disease Game, Healthy-wood Squares, Age Yourself and a distracted driving experience.
The first phase of The Amazing You opens May 24, 2008 and will be permanently located in MOSI’s third floor exhibit gallery. The exhibition is sponsored by MetLife Foundation, and supported by BlueCross and BlueShield of Florida and BayCare Health System. For more information, visit http://www.mosi.org/
