Yard Sale for the Cure

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PRLog (Press Release)May 14, 2008 – Canadians across the country will join breast cancer survivor and Yard Sale for the Cure founder, Rachael Smith, as she gives back to those who helped her through her battle with breast cancer. The Fourth Annual Yard Sale for the Cure, (www.yardsaleforthecure.com), will bring together hundreds of Canadians, encouraging them to clean out their attics, basements and garages and sell the things they no longer need in an effort to raise money for breast cancer research and treatment. This simple concept was created in 2005 after Smith’s nine month battle with breast cancer and to date, has raised close to $300,000.

“What started as a small community yard sale in the Toronto Beaches neighbourhood has turned into a fabulous, ‘fun’draising program for an extremely important cause,” says Smith. “One of the reasons we have been so successful is it is easy to participate and the rewards are endless. We also count on the continued support of our sponsors – RE/MAX and Abraxis Bioscience – who help us reach out to communities across Canada.

Canadians from coast to coast are invited to visit www.yardsaleforthecure.com to sign up as a registered host and receive a Yard Sale for the Cure Kit. Each kit includes a Yard Sale for the Cure lawn sign, cap and pink balloons to attract attention from passers-by. Participants are asked to donate all or a portion of their yard sale proceeds to help the charity in their quest to create a world where our daughters will never need to hear the words: “You have breast cancer”.

This year, the newest addition to the program is a Google Mapping System that helps shoppers plan their yard sale routes on May 31. The map can be found on the website under “Map It Shop It”. Last year more than 1200 sales were officially registered on the site. This year, shoppers will be able to see where they are and plan out their route to get to as many of them as possible.

One hundred per cent of the funds donated to Yard Sale for the Cure go to the Yard Sale hosts’ choice: the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation or one of thirty treatment facilities in communities across the country.
Yard Sale for the Cure sponsor, RE/MAX, helps people maximize the value of their home by encouraging de-cluttering and selling rather than moving belongings they no longer need. Abraxis Oncology has an impressive new taxol drug called Abraxine and generous media sponsors include CBS Outdoor, SNAP Newspaper Group and SavvyMom.ca.
