KILLINGTON, Vt. – The Summit Lodge has been recognized as a 2008 Editors’ Choice in Yankee Magazine’s Travel Guide to New England, on sale from May 6 through the end of August. The Editors’ Choice recommendation designates Yankee editors’ and writers’ favorite restaurants, lodges, and attractions across New England, with information resources divided by state and region.
“Yankee’s editors and our trusted legion of travel writers select our Editors’ Choice winners,” said Yankee Editor Mel Allen. “From their own experiences and tips from our readers, they research and find the most deserving establishments in New England. Recipients range from the rustic to the refined, but all are noteworthy and memorable destinations.”
Established in 1960 as the first lodge built in Killington, the Summit Lodge is now home to third generation guests who make their stay at the four-season resort a family tradition. With sweeping views of the ski trails of Killington Resort and Pico Mountain, guests are greeted upon arrival by the lodge’s traditional welcoming committee, two large St. Bernards.
“Otto and Louise, two friendly St. Bernards, greet you here,” according to Yankee editors. “The inn’s 45 rooms—most with patios, terraces, and mountain views—put the accent on family instead of frills. Pool, hot tub, spa, and clay tennis courts are all on the list of amenities.”
Currently 200-pound Otto and youngster Louise are the latest in a tradition that has numbered more than a dozen wonderful dogs. The entirely non-smoking resort offers two restaurants and two lounges, two swimming pools, a large hot tub, and the Avalanche Spa.
“We are thrilled to have been named an Editors’ Choice in the only magazine devoted to New England,” said Bill Bauer, owner and innkeeper of the Summit Lodge and its sister restaurant the Grist Mill. “Yankee Magazine’s editorial tradition is so recognizable on coffee tables across the six-state region and we believe the Summit Lodge’s traditional New England flair is a perfect complement to the magazine’s focus.”
The Summit Lodge will also be recommended on YankeeMagazine.com.
