Mitel Signs on as Founding Reporter of The Climate Registry

Partner of Choice for Unified Communications for the Real World Takes Action on Climate Change

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PRLog (Press Release)May 14, 2008WASHINGTON, DC, – Mitel® (http://www.mitel.com) has become a Founding Reporter of The Climate Registry (http://www.theclimateregistry.org) by being the first provider of enterprise communications solutions to join the organization. The Climate Registry is a non-profit organization established to measure and publicly report greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) in a common, accurate, and transparent manner consistent across industry sectors and borders. Thirty-nine U.S. states, six Canadian provinces, three Native American tribes, eight Mexican states, and the District of Columbia are the founders of the organization.

“Mitel has demonstrated exemplary environmental leadership by courageously stepping forward to support The Climate Registry in its preliminary stages. We are deeply grateful for their integral support in helping to address the challenge of climate change,” said Gina McCarthy, chair of The Climate Registry.

A forerunner in the unified communications industry, Mitel has demonstrated environmental stewardship on several fronts by voluntarily committing to measure, independently verify, and publicly report their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions on an annual basis utilizing The Climate Registry General Reporting Protocol. The protocol is based on the internationally recognized GHG measurement standards of the World Resources Institute and World Business Council on Sustainability.

“Mitel’s comprehensive portfolio of communications solutions enables customers to lower their impact on the environment through reduced corporate travel and commuting, less power consumption, and the recycling of IT related E-waste,” said Don Smith, Mitel’s CEO. “Consider that a roundtrip from New York to Chicago produces 0.35 tons of carbon and flying the U.S. coast to coast accounts for one ton of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases per person. In this regard, teleworking helps spare the environment 3.6 tons of pollutants per teleworker per year.”

Within its business, Mitel has adopted environmentally conscious processes and standards that extend from senior executives to each employee to suppliers. An ISO 14001-certified company since 1999, Mitel has established and continue's to foster a culture of conservation and awareness. The many efforts put forth by Mitel include the use of low-flush toilets and a variable-speed drive for HVAC systems, and the increase of building temperatures to save energy. All washroom paper towel waste and cafeteria food waste is composted, and electronic waste, and many more materials than legal regulations require, is recycled. Mitel’s RoHS-rated equipment decommissioning and destruction is carried out in such a manner as to not be harmful to the environment; and that scrap metal and precious metal components are recovered and recycled for re-use.

To lower emissions, the company has switched from six-cylinder to four-cylinder fleet vehicles and has moved distribution activities to regional warehouses to reduce unnecessary travel. Yet, perhaps, the most effective practice at Mitel is something individual employees do: 40 percent of Mitel employees in North America telework or have the ability to telework on a regular basis. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) figures indicate that if just 10 percent of the nation’s workforce telecommuted just one day a week Americans would conserve more than 1.2 million gallons of fuel per week.
