Smaller cars are more economical in a number of ways. They cost less to run, less to insure and you pay less for your Road Fund License. But if you’re not ready to downsize or take the bus just yet, here are some useful tips on how to save fuel.
• Buy the cheapest fuel. To find out which garage has the cheapest fuel prices visit www.petrolprices.com.
• Make your fuel go further by sticking to the speed limit. Your engine is more efficient when you drive at low speeds.
• Drive gently and avoid harsh acceleration. Driving aggressively doesn’t get you to where you’re going any faster; it just increases your stress levels and fuel consumption.
• Only use your air-conditioning when you absolutely have to. Open your windows instead.
• Lighten up when you drive. The heavier your car, the higher your fuel consumption. Take all useless and unnecessary items out of your car because for every extra 100 lbs, your fuel consumption increases by up to 2%.
• Reduce the drag factor. Remove roof/bike racks if not in use. They create drag and increase fuel consumption.
• Replace your car’s dirty air filter. A clean air filter can save you up to 10% on your fuel bill. Get it checked when you take your car in for a service or every 20 000 miles.
• The correct air pressure in your tyres can also affect fuel consumption. Over or under inflated tyres increase fuel consumption and wear.
• If you have clean oil in your engine, it creates less resistance and uses less fuel. Check your car owner’s manual for the correct viscosity oil for your engine.
