The Sky news technology section has just revealed that BT is to launch a new service that would allow users of their smartphone to go on line anywhere with their service “Broadband anywhere”. However if you are outside the home environment and cannot connect to your broadband package then you would have to revert to connecting to a hotspot to use the internet. This is nothing new of course as there are many mobile phones already on the market which have built in Wi-Fi and can be used the same way.
The majority of Nokia E series phones come with a WLAN connection and 3G which makes connecting to any of the UKs hotspots easy. The Nokia E51 comes with many features including WLAN and on this model there is also a feature which allows you to search for available networks and allows you to connect very easily to them in seconds. The phone also includes an HTML web browser and runs on the 3rd edition S60 software, which means you can access a huge range of software on the phone such as instant messaging, e-mail clients, Nokia maps and office software. The phone as with all mobiles lack storage memory, but this is easily remedied with the addition of a MicroSD memory card. The MicroSD card will allow you to store hundreds of photos and videos which are taken with the 2 megapixel camera which includes up to 4 x times zoom.
Another favourite is also from Nokia. The Nokia E61 is little on the chunky side; however it does have a large screen, a QWERTY keyboard and is optimised for e-mail. You can also run a huge array of software on the phone as it also comes with the S60 series software. The E61 comes with WLAN for connecting to hotspots throughout the UK and also has WCDMA. For those who like to keep in constant touch, the Nokia E61 is a pure delight as push e-mail is supported. This means that all e-mail delivered to your exchange address is automatically sent to your phone. By the way if you don’t want to pay out for an expensive e-mail exchange package you can get a free one at mail2web. You will have to expand the internal memory of the phone and in the case of the Nokia E61 this is by way of a MiniSD card.

Both of these models will allow you to connect to the World Wide Web via any Wi-Fi hotspot in the UK along with your home network. So why bother buying the BT model that they are pushing alongside their “Broadband anywhere?” Any phone that has Wi-fi and 3G capabilities will allow you to surf away to your hearts content free of charge.
