FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PRLog (Press Release)May 08, 2008 – “We’re sick of the Crap in Pet Food!”

On May 13, 2008 the FDA will hold a public meeting ‘seeking input from stakeholder groups for the development of ingredient, processing and labeling standards to ensure the safety of pet food.” The largest ‘stakeholder group’ – U.S. Pet Owners – can send the FDA a well crafted message by joining the ‘We’re sick of the crap in pet food’ campaign which sends a biodegradable poop bag to the FDA Pet Food Safety Meeting (get it…crap in pet food = poop bag!).

The ‘We’re Sick of the Crap in Pet Food’ campaign is the brainstorm of Susan Thixton’s TruthAboutPetFood.com. Thixton and TruthAboutPetFood.com initiated the ‘crap’ campaign hoping to provide a presence for U.S. pet owners at the upcoming FDA Pet Food Safety meeting and to pressure the FDA to initiate new and stronger pet food regulations. “This meeting is very important and I wanted a way for pet owner’s voices to be heard – pet owners are the largest pet food stakeholder group! Sending the FDA poop bags is the perfect way for pet owners to make a strong point – stop putting crap in our pet food” says Thixton. “And just to be clear…the poop bags will only hold a picture of ‘poop’ – not the real thing!”

So here’s the poop…TruthAboutPetFood.com connected with Pets for the Environment and PoopBags.com for the ‘crap’ campaign which will send a personalized poop bag directly to the FDA Pet Food Safety Meeting next week – Tuesday May 13, 2008. All pet owners that have hopes for safer and healthier pet foods are encouraged to make a minimal $5.00 donation for a poop bag to be delivered to the meeting in their name. Each poop bag will be personalized with the pet owner’s name and your personal message to the FDA - then delivered to the Pet Food Safety meeting by ‘Eddie’ the Pets For The Environment spokes dog. PoopBags.com has graciously donated the poop bags so that 100% of the proceeds can go towards the Pets for the Environment pet food testing fund. Thixton states “Pets for the Environment was the perfect organization to benefit from the crap campaign – they are trying to raise funds to test pet foods – their testing results will hold pet food manufacturers accountable for their products and help pets stay healthy. PoopBags.com stepped up and donated all the poop bags! It’s a win/win.”

Existing pet food regulations allow pet food manufacturers to use inferior grades of meats and animal parts, dangerous chemical preservatives, risky imported ingredients, and more – and never inform the pet owner on the product label. Current pet food regulations only recommend quality control practices; a uniform and mandatory procedure of quality control is needed. Presently the pet food industry is provided a broad use of waste ingredients from the human food industry including chicken feet, cow intestines and euthanized animals; these waste ingredients are listed as by-products or meat and bone meal and pet owners never have a clue to their inferior nature. The pet food recall that began in March 2007 was reportedly responsible for the death or illness of close to 50,000 dogs and cats in the U.S. New, strong FDA regulations along with truth in pet food labeling could prevent further pet deaths and illness.
