Police have been camping out at a BP filling station checking the number plates of cars as they pull in for fuel. Petrol stations and supermarket car parks are a good place to use the automatic number plate recognition systems, which check number plates against various databases.
But it was not just the number plates that alerted the police as many drivers were caught not wearing seat belts, speeding and other offences. The ANPR can check that a car is insured, MOT’d, taxed or indeed stolen, but it cannot check the speed of car, that’s left down to the speed cameras.
Amongst the worst driving offences are those that concern no insurance, these drivers can cause no end of trouble for other drivers and pedestrians too, although all driving offences have their own problems for all road users?
But the police were not just there to catch people, they were also offering help and advice for drivers, in fact they gave away and fitted some specially designed screws for number plates, these screws are the first line of defence against number plate thieves.
