Dr Chitrit went onto explain that the procedure is a resection of the outer part of the stomach leaving only 90 cc capacity (around 3 ounces) and also, losing the sensation of hunger due to a decrease of the ghrelin, a hormone produced in the stomach and associated with the feeling of hunger. The patients with sleeve gastrectomy loses the same weight as a bypass procedure without all the risks of having intestinal obstructions, intestinal leaks.
