"We want to thank the original 22 women that gathered at my home in Virginia on May 22, 2004 and helped to launch this wonderful organization. We have grown from 60 members at the end of 2004, to well over 400 in the Washington, D.C. region & nationally and over 1500 subcribers to our weekly message from a sister." Nelson said.
The first spotlight member is Ms. Beverly Kirk, who is a University of Kentucky alumna and award-winning TV and radio news reporter based in Washington, D.C., Kirk will be one of two featured speakers at the University of Kentucky's 141st Commencement set for 2 p.m. Sunday, May 4, in Lexington Center's Rupp Arena. Admiral Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, will also address the graduates.
Kirk, a native of Burkesville, Ky., graduated from UK's Patterson School of Diplomacy and International Commerce. She also earned her bachelor's degree in history and broadcasting from Western Kentucky University. A former news reporter and anchor at WLEX-TV in Lexington, Kirk's resume includes work for National Public Radio, as well as NBC News in Washington. Currently, Kirk is a news anchor for NewsChannel 8 , similar to a local version of CNN for our nation's capital and surrounding metropolitan area.
