Canada looks Overseas as Doctor Shortages Rise

April 30, 2008 - PRLog -- It is proposed that doctors and healthcare workers receive priority treatment if the projected changes in the immigration process are passed. This bill will allow the Immigration Minister, Diane Finely, to prioritise certain kinds of applications from those of specific occupations.

Countries like Australia and New Zealand screen applications according to occupations; however this is not the case in Canada. Canada wants to start this process too in order to speed up the immigration process for those people who have skills desperately needed.

These amendments aim to reduce the massive backlog of 925 000 immigration applications.

However despite these initiatives to bring in more doctors from abroad, many doctors who move to Canada find it difficult to find a teaching hospital to do their residency. It is essential for all doctors to do this in order to give them accreditation to work as a doctor in Canada.

Acceptance for their residency depends on a tier system that accepts Canadian students first, followed by international doctors and then sponsored foreign-visa trainees. However many people complain about the trainees who come from overseas and leave after their training. There is a shortage of teachers at teaching hospitals and the fact that trainees come into the country and utalise the teaching and then return home is a blow to Canadian society. The Canadian society does not ultimately benefit from this.

In a recent survey by MoneySense released on Monday, the best Canadian city to live in was announced. This year Ottawa was ranked number one. The number of doctors in a city is an important aspect of the survey. This highlights how important the necessity for high level medical care is to the Canadian population and the need for Canada to attract more doctors.

Doctors the world over can apply for a Canadian work permit or can enter via sponsorship and nomination.
