English Teacher Explores Adventures of Piracy Through Female Eyes
Historically Based Novel Reflects on Female Issues Present Today

One historical woman would do anything to break away from her restrictive life to discover herself and gain the freedom she so desperately desires—even if it meant disguising herself as a male and living the freebooting life of a pirate. Using his historical knowledge and passion for writing, author Jeffery Williams resurrected the life of 18th century Anne Bonney in his historically based fiction, Pirate Spirit: The Adventures of Anne Bonney.

Set in Ireland, the Carolinas, and the pirate-infested Caribbean waters of the 1700s, Pirate Spirit is the tale of Anne Bonney, the unlikely pirate who disguised herself as a man and fought side-by-side with a notorious band of rogues plundering ships around the Spanish Main. Pirate Spirit follows Bonney’s transformation from a troubled child living in aristocratic society to cutthroat pirate, as she struggles for identity and purpose.

Although Anne Bonney lived over three centuries ago, her struggles are identified by women today—a woman seeking survival in two male-dominated societies: aristocratic and piractical. Narrated in the first-person, Williams intricately follows Anne Bonney’s life, giving an in depth look at her defining choices and relationships. His life-like character development through the plot’s twists and turns leaves readers feeling deeply connected to the characters’ struggles and triumphs.

“While stories of famous pirates are many and varied for children, I felt a historically based literary novel about one of the most memorable and unique of the Caribbean pirates would prove an intriguing read for adults,” says Williams.

Diligently researched, Pirate Spirit provides a great deal of knowledge and insight into the Golden Age of Piracy, while entertaining readers with an action-packed adventure and philosophic reflection. In addition to being informative and thrilling, Williams also captivates readers with the deeper themes and symbols resonating throughout the story, as he vividly portrays a fascinating period in history.
