April 24, 2008 - PRLog -- pTools Software today announced the completion of one of the largest public sector IT projects undertaken in Ireland to date. The HSE intranet, which is built on pTools Content Management Software (CMS), provides information and services for all of its 100 thousand strong workforce, and will be regularly accessed by over 50 thousand HSE staff from a network of more than 25 thousand computers.  Key features of the intranet include access to daily staff news, briefings and reports, staff email and contact directories, medical libraries and other resources.

pTools was awarded the contract following a competitive tender process and worked with HSE ICT Services and the Communications divisions over an eighteen month period to deliver the new intranet.  Known as HSEnet, it provides a single unified location for internal online content for all HSE staff and, since going live in November 2007, is already receiving more than 750 thousand page impressions per month and is expected to exceed 1 million page impressions in the coming months.

Commenting on the benefits of the HSEnet, Stephen McGrath, Head of Internal Communications, HSE said: “As one of the largest employers in the State it is essential that we have a system that allows for ease of communication between over 100 thousand staff members, regardless of location. HSEnet represents a significant communications and business tool for HSE staff nationwide and makes briefing a workforce of thousands a simple matter- information can be posted and is immediately accessible by everyone.”

The deployment almost certainly makes pTools the most used content management software in Ireland and combined with other deployments as many as one in ten people in Ireland who logon to their intranet each morning are logging on to a pTools intranet system.

Commenting on the development Tom Skinner, Managing Director of pTools says:  "This is one of the largest intranet Content Management Software deployments in the world.  We’ve been working on this since 2006 so it’s rewarding to see HSEnet is already proving to be a success- attracting significant use by staff and greatly contributing to the daily work of the organisation."

A number of affiliated agencies including the Department of Health, the Department of Finance and Hospitals have also been given access to the intranet.

Mr. Skinner continues: “Given the scale and scope of HSEnet there are clear benefits to the HSE in terms of information management and the efficiencies of driving business applications to the new browser based interface.”

pTools multi-site architecture allows re-use of content across multiple site locations from a single repository, while maintaining all the necessary workflow and compliance rules demanded of enterprise level initiatives. Content compliance within pTools uses sophisticated audit trail functionality that allows pTools customers to validate all events in the life of the content developed. This is essential given the nature and importance of information delivered to HSEnet.

About Health Service Executive:
The Health Service Executive (HSE) is responsible for providing Health and Personal Social Services for everyone living in the Republic of Ireland.

The HSE provides thousands of different services in hospitals and communities across the country.  These services range from public health nurses treating older people in the community to caring for children with challenging behaviour; from educating people how to live healthier lives to performing highly-complex brain surgery; from planning for major emergencies to controlling the spread of infectious diseases. At some stage every year, everybody in Ireland will use one or more of the services provided. They are of vital importance to the entire population.

The establishment of the HSE represented the beginning of the largest programme of change ever undertaken in the Irish public service. Prior to its establishment, services were delivered through a complex structure of ten regional Health Boards, the Eastern Regional Health Authority and a number of other different agencies and organisations.  The HSE replaced all of these organisations. It is now the single body responsible for ensuring that everybody can access cost effective and consistently high quality health and personal social services. The services are delivered making best use of resources allocated by Government. The largest employer in the State, the HSE employs more than 100,000 staff in direct employment and in agencies funded by the HSE. The budget of almost €15 billion is the largest of any public sector organisation.
