In the four years since its inception, The New York Polish Film Festival
has become one of the most innovative and important annual platforms
for Polish cinema in the United States. The New York Polish Film Festival's
mission is to expose a new audience to the unique, diverse and lively world
of Polish cinema.
This year the New York Polish Film Festival will showcase some of the most
compelling artistic voices ranging from award winning contemporary Polish
filmmakers to emerging talent. The Festival will premiere many acclaimed
feature films, documentaries and shorts in addition to devoting an evening
to renowned Polish filmmaker Andrzej Wadja's film, Katyn.
Featuring a stellar cast, Andrzej Wajda’s Academy Award-nominated film
is a powerful and courageous retelling of the WWII massacre of Polish
officers by the Soviet army and portrays both the plight of the condemned
and the quest for truth and atonement by those they left behind.
Mr. Wajda's own father perished in the forest of Katyn in Russia
and he struggled for years to make this film.
Katyn will screen on May 11th at 7pm @ MoMA. NY. NY.
Many of the festival films are Award winners in Poland and abroad,
but have never have been shown in NY. The NYPFF has invited
Poland's most talented directors, actors and young filmmakers to
debut their work here in New York City and to meet and engage in
discussions about their respective crafts with the audience.

Immensity of Justice by Wieslaw Saniewski. This thriller is inspired by a true
crime in the 90's, when a beautiful, up-and-coming journalist is found murdered,
along with her unborn child, and her fellow journalist and lover is swiftly
dispatched to jail. The case is reopened almost two decades later, when
a young law student becomes obsessed with uncovering the truth.

The best Polish films of 2007: Tricks by Andrzej Jakimowski.
(Best Picture in Gdynia Film Festival 2007) In his quest to win back
his absent father, six-year-old Stefek attempts to bribe fate using
wisdom gleaned from his elder sister's self-help books.

Time to Die by Dorota Kedzierzawska. Aniela awaits the end in a
beautiful but dilapidated mansion. With only her faithful old dog as an
ally, she fends off her scheming son's attempts to sell the house to a
ruthless property developer.

Let’s Go to the Movies Tomorrow. Set in 1938 and inspired by
screenwriter Jerzy Stawinski's own experience, the film follows
three young Warsaw students whose lives and dreams are thwarted
by the Nazi invasion of Poland.

Extras. When a Chinese film director comes to a remote Polish
village to shoot a melodrama, he mistakenly decides to cast the locals
because the Poles all look miserable to him and can lend his film an
air of tragedy.

Shot in a neighborhood in Warsaw where few dare to tread.

Narrated by a young girl, Gevia, who comes into possession
of a magical perfume that serves as a love potion and catalyst for
the characters and escapades that unfold in this lyrical, delightful film.

Exclusive U.S. premiere of the documentary Wierszalin directed by
Francesco Carriozzini. In true cinema verite style, this documentary
captures the personal drama, both on and off-stage of a Polish theatre
troupe as they rehearse for their newest piece "God Nijinksy" in a remote
Polish village. Wierszalin will debut Sat, May 10 @ 6:45pm @ Anthology.

Katyn by Oscar winner Andrzej Wadja. Featuring a stellar cast,
Andrzej Wajda’s Academy Award-nominated film tells the tale of
Katyn in Western Russia where some 5000 Polish officers were
massacred in 1940 by the Russian army.
Special Screening at MoMA on May 11th @ 7pm.

Director Saniewski tells the story from three different perspectives,
adding a profound and enigmatic dimension to this compelling
mystery based on a beautiful, pregnant journalist's murder that
shook Polish society in the 90s.
Exclusive Screening of Summer Love by Piotr Uklanski.
Summer Love is the first Polish Western. The film stars Val Kilmer
as a corpse. This film was exhibited at the Whitney Museum.

Two-For-One. Every feature will be preceded by a short film or a documentary.
The NYPFF commenced the Beyond The Borders Awards in memory
of filmmaker extraordinaire Krzysztof Kieslowski. The jury bestows three
Awards to filmmakers for Best Feature Film, Best Documentary, and
Best Short film. The jury of prestigious filmmakers and artists include
cinematographer Adam Hollander, whose many credits include
Waldo Salt's classic "Midnight Cowboy." This years Awards Ceremony
will be held on May 13th @ Anthology.
NYPFF's Closing Night Party will kick into high gear with
Polish food, vodka & guest filmmakers at Anthology Films Archive
@ 10:30pm on May 13.
The New York Polish Film Festival was founded four years
ago by Festival Director Hanna Hartowicz, in association with
FILMART Productions. An artist in her own right, Ms. Hartowicz has
a keen eye for recognizing and nurturing creative talent.
The NYPFF aims to foster a community that encourages
humanitarian and personal themes to be illuminated through
the diverse yet unifying medium of artistic expression.
