Like clockwork on Sunday the faithful emerged from their homes wearing their Sunday best with Bibles in hand as they headed off to their various places of worship. Passing by a certain non-believer who had never taken an interest in their ritual, but on this day, Linette Scavo for the first time in her life was awakened within with divine inspiration.

Persuading her hubby to forego watching the Pistons so she could go to church to get some of her questions answered about God and Jesus, Linette and family got dressed to attend church.

Upon walking outside, her neighbor Bree immediately commented on how pretty Linette looked and asked her what she was all dressed up for?

Linette replied: "I decided I should go to church today. ...Since you're the most religious person I know I was wondering if you would take us to your church?"

Bree: "I would love that. We're leaving right now. You can follow us."

Once in church together, the scene changes to the Pastor's sermon wherein he says: "And this is what should bring us peace in our hearts. The blessed knowledge that God's love for us is as sure as the sunlight and that it is always shining. We only need to see it."

Linette being a bit puzzled, raises her hand in church to ask a question.

Bree: "What are you doing?"

Linette: "I've got a question about the sermon."

Bree: "Please! We don't do that here."

Pastor: "Uh, yes, can I help you?"

Linette: “Your sermon was lovely, especially the part about the trees.”

Pastor: “Thank you.”

Linette: “But here’s where you lost me. ‘God’s love is as sure as the sunlight.’”

Pastor: “Yes. Absolutely.”

Bree (whispering firmly): “There. You have your answer. Now shut it!”

Linette: “The reason I ask is there are wars all over the world and it seems like every month some dumb ass walks into a school and starts shooting children. So, I’m thinking God’s love? I’m not so sure.”

Pastor: “Ah, the eternal question. Why do bad things happen to good people? What you have to remember is God gave us free will. Much of the evil in the world is brought about by man on himself.”

Linette (sighs): “Oh, Lord!” (and raises her hand immediately again)

Pastor: “Yes, Linette?”

Linette: “Ok. I give you that one, but what about the tornado that just happened? You can’t blame man for that.”

Bree (speaking to her husband): “Get the keys ready. We’ll slip out the back.”

Pastor: “You bring up a big theological issue. One that deserves a lot more time to explore. Why don’t you come to our Tuesday night Bible study? We can discuss it then.”

Linette: “Well sure. I’m easy. Well, thanks.” (smiles and sits down)

The next day Linette has bought herself a new Bible and sees Bree to whom she says, “Hey church buddy! Look what I got!”

Bree: “A Bible”

Linette: “Yeah and I’m breaking her in tonight. Nothing like that new Bible smell.”

Bree: “So you’re, he, he, coming to Bible study?”

Linette: “Yeah, and I hope the Reverend’s ready cause I’ve got about a zillion questions for him.”

Bree: “Last Sunday when you kept raising your hand. We don’t really do that. The church isn’t a place for questions. It’s a place for answers.”

Linette: “Yeah, but how do you get the answers if you don’t ask the questions?”

Bree: “It’s just that in our church people don’t talk back to the minister.”

Linette: “What if I need to? What if that’s the kind of church I’m looking for?”

The following Sunday, Pastor Sikes greets Bree as she enters the church saying: “So is your delightful neighbor coming? The one with all the questions?”

Bree: “Delightful? Heh, I thought she annoyed you?”

Pastor: “No, I found her refreshing. It’s like I always say. Church is not a place for answers. It’s a place for questions.”
