Sixteen years ago Susan Thixton lost an eight year old dog to bone cancer her veterinarian told her was caused from chemical preservatives in pet food. Her heartbreak of feeding her dog into deadly cancer changed her life forever. She began researching and studying the pet food industry and the more she learned, the more frustrated she became. Finally in 2006 Thixton found an outlet for her frustration with her website TruthAboutPetFood.com. Her website now educates pet owners around the world providing free life saving education.
“Losing a pet because of a tainted food or as in my case a dangerous ingredient in the food is gut wrenching” says Thixton. Susan turned her heartbreak into something positive – TruthAboutPetFood.com - hoping to help other pet owners not make the same mistakes she did. The website offers a library of pet food education articles and touts a newsletter subscription list of pet owners from the U.S., Canada, France, U.K., New Zealand, Amsterdam, Philippines, Singapore, and Australia. Thixton receives frequent feedback from subscribers quoting one received just yesterday “I don’t know what I’d do without you.”
TruthAboutPetFood.com reports on and explains in ‘pet owner language’ pet food news. The library of articles has grown extensively in the past year almost to an overwhelming point for newcomers. Because of this, Thixton has compiled a few of the most important pet food articles into one section for first time visitors to her site, including a brief list of risk potential pet food ingredients she calls ‘must avoid pet food ingredients’
Susan Thixton has been studying the pet food industry over 15 years. In 2005 Thixton published the book Truth About Pet Food which led to the development and publication of Petsumer Report™ - an online and paper publication that rates and reviews dog foods, cat foods, and dog and cat treats. Future plans for Petsumer Report™ are to provide chemical analysis of pet foods and reviews on various other pet supplies including toys, bedding, collars and leashes.
