The Hamner Hosts “Funding For Innovation In North Carolina” Workshop

PRLog (Press Release) – Apr 15, 2008 – RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. – The Hamner Institutes for Health Sciences (www.thehamner.org) will host “Funding for Innovation in North Carolina,” a SBIR/STTR workshop on Tuesday, April 29 from 8:30 a.m.-11 a.m. The seminar, presented by the Small Business Technology Development Center (SBTDC), addresses how bio/pharma start-up companies can obtain government funding for commercially orientated research projects.

The Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program and the Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) program are administered by the Small Business Association’s (SBA) Office of Technology. Through these two programs, the SBA ensures that the nation’s small, high-tech, innovative businesses remain a significant part of the federal government’s research and development efforts. Eleven federal departments participate in the SBIR program and five departments participate in the STTR program, awarding more than $2 billion annually in grants and contracts to small high-tech businesses. Funding allows companies, small or start-up, to develop new or enhanced products and services based on advanced technologies.

Guest speakers for the April 29 workshop include John Ujvari, SBIR program specialist, NC SBTDC and Dr. Jerry Heindel, SBIR program manager, NIH/NIEHS. Awards will be presented to Karen LeVert, president, CEO and co-founder of Southeast TechInventures, Inc. and Rich West, CEO of Advanced Liquid Logic.
