Apr 14, 2008 – Ragamalika, the classical dance and music club of BITS, Pilani was established in 1990 by a group of enthusiastic students and faculty with the purpose of nurturing India's rich heritage and carrying forward the Indian tradition by advocating the opulence of Indian fine arts. Ragamalika is passionately dedicated to the cause of promotion of classical music and dance amongst the BITSian public. Ragamalika conducts cultural programmes and concerts in Pilani throughout the year. Its members are actively involved in the organization as well as the management of all activities related to the events, apart from participating in the performances themselves.
The beauty of the Ghazal lies in its lyrical content, brevity, sensitivity, imagery, subtlety, epigrammatic terseness and the liberty as well as the flexibility to deal with various themes The charm of the Ghazals lies in the live performance where the audience can relish the Sher-o-shyree within the lyrics. Ghazals can express all moods of passion and love, philosophy of life, heart breaks and sadness. Ghazals above all offer immense scope for innovation and no wonder students of Birla Institute of Technology and Science – BITS Pilani have a special place for it. Considering the fact that Ghazals have a mass popularity among worldwide BITSian music lovers, Ragamalika organized a Ghazal Concert Shamm e Ghazal on Sunday 13 April 2008 in the Engineering Theatre of the Institute. The Ghazals chosen for the evening included Dhoondo Ge Agar, Shaam Se Aankh Mein Nami Si Hai, Wo Kagaz Ki Kashti, Ghungroo Toot Gaye, Chupke Chupke Raat Din, Dayar e Dil Ki Raat Mein and Raat Jo Tu Ne Deep Bujhaaye. Pratik Maheshwari, Akash Dey and Amrita Purkayastha with her haunting voice mesmerized the audience with their soulful rendition of the Ghazals and were ably supported on Tabla by Rithesh R Iyer and Hardik Dhanjibhai Kabaria.
