FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
PRLog (Press Release) –
Apr 11, 2008 – This month kicks off the countdown to the final 365 days before an Orangevale father (age 60) and son (age 32) take a 741-mile walk from the steps of the state capitol building in Sacramento, to the capitol building in Carson City, and on to the capitol building in Salt Lake City.
Plans and preparations are under way for the governors of the three states to be involved for a few minutes of their busy days, greeting or sending off/welcoming the two men to their respective states. The son and his father will leave Sacramento on Wednesday, April 29, 2009 and arrive in Salt Lake City on Wednesday, May 27, 2009. They expect to average 26.2 miles each day. They anticipate that many will walk some miles with them, along the way, be it one or twenty miles, while helping to raise monies for the cause. Pledges for walking will play a significant role in helping the two men strive to raise $100,000 for the American Diabetes Association. In October 2008 (with six months remaining before the actual walk begins) an all-day event will be held in Fair Oaks where others can walk with the two men, win prizes, play games, enjoy food, music and be involved in the “Heads Up!” event where the community gathers to participate in helping the two men reach their goals. The walk idea was hatched in October 2007 as the father began a rigorous daily routine to lower his blood pressure and to fight back against the discovery of Type 2 diabetes in him. The son joined in the fight, not wanting to battle it himself later on in life. Since November the two men have walked more than 550 miles in preparation for the long walk up the Sierra, across central Nevada and northward through western Utah to the valley of the Great Salt Lake. The ups and downs of rural Sacramento County have been a perfect track. Both father and son are hopeful that many friends, family, strangers, and fellow diabetics will support this walk. It looks to be a grand experience for many.
