Apr 11, 2008 – A 2008 Authentic Beijing Olympic Torch has been put on the auction block on Ebay. An unidentified Olympic runner is selling his torch in protest of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. The unidentified man is donating all of the proceeds to stop the Genocide in Darfur and end the oppression of the Tibetan Monks in China.
The reason behind the sale of this priceless piece of history was sparked by thousands of demonstrators and spectators who crowded San Francisco’s waterfront Wednesday to witness the flame's symbolic journey to the Beijing Games.
Faced with massive crowds of both pro-and anti-Chinese protesters, the planned closing ceremony at the San Francisco Bay waterfront was canceled and moved to San Francisco International Airport. Last-minute changes to the route and site of the closing ceremony were made amid security concerns following chaotic protests over the torch in Paris and London, but officials effectively prevented many spectators who wanted to see the flame from witnessing the historic moment.
Meanwhile Wednesday, the White House said anew that President Bush would attend the Olympics, but left open the possibility that he would skip the opening ceremonies. Asked whether Bush would go to that portion of the games, White House press secretary Dana Perino demurred, citing the fluid nature of a foreign trip schedule this far out and the many factors that go into devising it.
