“Cyber Bullying” is making the headlines but is that the only type that is growing? The answer is probably no. As economics challenges continue, bullying will continue to rise. Kids that feel they have no control at home will continue to look for an opportunity to control some point of their lives, so they decide to control someone else’s life.
Schools are the point of most bullying because of the ratio of students to adults. Teachers and aides can only observe so much. One statistic states that a bullying situation only last 37 seconds. That actually is probably quite long for most of these acts. The teacher turns to write on the board and the bully goes into action. By the time he or she turns back around the situation has ended.
So how do they get caught? Students have to feel empowered to report the incidents without feeling they are going to become targeted by the bully. School officials have to work carefully not to reveal the student who has shared the bully’s actions; because of this fear of being revealed many incidents go unviewed and unreported.
So why is it so important to stop bullying early on?
1. Students that are labeled as a bully are more likely to become alcoholics and need government assistance as adults.
2. A child who is bullied often becomes socially isolated, withdrawn, depressed and feels insecure.
3. Schools that do not take care of bullying create an atmosphere of fear not safety among the student body.
4. A bully generally has no friends as they get older. People get tired of there behaviors and eventually leave them behind.
