Invasion of the Bible Thumpers

Fueled by his frustration with the direction the country has headed, "Invasion of the Bible Thumpers" is Skookum Maguire's response to George W. Bush’s claim that he was advised by god to invade Iraq.

April 9, 2008 - PRLog -- "I lost everything I’d worked for, for 15 years, and I owed it all to Jesus," writes Skookum Maguire, author of INVASION of the BIBLE THUMPERS. Due to the political climate of the country, Maguire was inspired to write a collection of short stories drawing on his personal experiences while living and working in the Pacific Northwest. The author was motivated to write the title story in response to George W. Bush’s claim that he was advised by god to invade Iraq, as well as “faith based” initiatives replacing public programs, not to mention the additional tax breaks for churches and the wealthy.

Fueled by his frustration with the direction the country has headed, Maguire creates a compelling collection of short stories that depict the lives of ordinary people who are exploring how to make their lives relevant. Each story looks at small details through the eyes of low wage blue-collar workers who are mostly in the logging industry.

Using a common theme, Maguire takes Christopher Hitchens’ message in God is Not Great and similar characters that could be found in Garrison Keillor’s stories, and fuses them in his collection that artfully positions modernity against human individualism. He brings a gimlet eye to a world he knows so well while giving the reader something to consider. His main message? Don’t let the religious right hijack democracy!
