It has been estimated that the criminal gangs involved in cloning cars and number plates could be making as much as £3 billion per year. This why a new campaign has been started to warn buyers of used cars to be very careful when looking at cars that could be cloned, as there are some signs to look out for.
With a growing number of car number plates being stolen in all areas, it is relatively easy to obtain the VIN number from the windows of the car and with these details the cloning can be begin. It has been estimated by mycarcheck.com that there could be around 100,000 cloned cars on the road today, of these around 25,000 could be highly dangerous cars being put back onto the UK’s roads.
The General Manager of mycarcheck.com, Roger Powell, said, "Car cloning is big business and often the proceeds from such crimes are used by organised gangs to finance drugs deals, human trafficking and even terrorism,"
"Often the first victims know they have been cloned is when they start getting fines for offences they never committed or worse they are involved in an accident.
"A car may look alright but if it has been written-off or stolen then insurance companies may not pay out if it is ever involved in another claim."
"Displaying vehicle identification numbers on car windscreens is akin to leaving a credit card in the middle of the street with its pin number on the back,"
"Perhaps the time has come for the motor manufacturers and the government to review the policy and move the vehicle identification numbers inside vehicles to make it more difficult for thieves to get the information."
Buyers of used cars are urged to check the vehicles history, because if the car has been cloned it may not be safe to drive as they may think and also they could end up losing out financially too.
