Dust mites are quietly lurking under our beds, inside sofas and carpet are creatures too small to see without a microscope or strong magnifying glass. Dust mites are in the arachnid family which includes spiders, scorpions and ticks. Dust mites feed on dead skin that sloughs from our bodies. They live their whole lives in dark corner dust bunnies: hatching, growing, eating, defecating, mating and laying eggs.
Dust mites and their droppings are known allergens. It is a protein in the mites and their feces to which people develop an allergic response. It's their bathroom habits that make us itch and wheeze. Lie on a rug where they live and you might get itchy red bumps on your skin. Breath in dust and you may have more symptoms like eczema, difficulty breathing, allergic rhinitis or even a trigger severe asthma attack. There is evidence that if an infant or a young child grows up where there's a high exposure to sensitizing substances, he or she will be more likely to develop allergy problems, asthma or both long term
A gram of house dust may contain 100 to 500 mites, and each mite produces 10 to 20 waste particles a day. This waste is extremely tiny and light, and thus is easily aerosolized.
How does one control dust mites?
While it is almost impossible to eliminate dust mites completely, there are several steps we recommend you can take to reduce dust mites allergen exposure:
There is no cure, only prevention.
• Encase mattresses and pillows zippered encasings.
• Treat the fabrics contact surface with AEGIS (Non Leaching) Microbe shield, which will reduce the food source of dusts mites. (Yeast found in mattress)
• Avoid down and feather bedding materials and wash bedding frequently in hot water.
• Avoid upholstered furniture when possible. Use leather or PVC upholstery where possible
• Avoid carpeting when possible or use a low pile carpet. Wash scatter rugs frequently.
• Dust and vacuum twice a week using a vacuum with HEPA filtration or a central vacuum that vents particles outside of the house.
• Keep humidity below 50%.
• Frequently change Fan Coil Filters and, if possible, use a HEPA air cleaner.
Avoids pets in your home Avoid using chemicals sprays which comes in contact with your body, where possible, encasement is the best solution to exposure.
