PR Log (Press Release) –
Apr 04, 2008 – Fort Lauderdale
International Film Festival and the Broward County
Main Library will commemorate the life and works of
visionary science fiction writer Sir Arthur C. Clarke
on Wednesday, April 16, 2008 at Cinema Paradiso.
The event begins at 5:30p.m. outside on the Paradiso
Patio for refreshments and a literary discussion. A
screening of the film, 2010: The Year We Made Contact
will follow at 7:00p.m. Afterwards, there will be an
audience Q&A with Deerfield Observer film writer, Dave
Montalbano.
Clarke, who passed away March 19, 2008 authored over
100 books. His fictional stories, filled with
scientific concepts, revolutionized the communications
and broadcast industries and formed the basis of what
we now see as scientific fact. His most notable work
was the 2001: A Space Odyssey book series (2001, 2010,
2061, 3001). Together with legendary director Stanley
Kubrick , Clarke’s most famous story, 2001: A Space
Odyssey, came to life on the silver screen in 1968.
2010: Odyssey Two was also made into the film titled,
2010: The Year We Made Contact. The film, directed
Peter Hyams, was theatrically released in 1984. Due to
the political environment in America during the 1980s,
the novel and film present a Cold War theme, with the
looming tensions of nuclear warfare. Though the film
was not considered to be as revolutionary or artistic
as 2001, criticial reviews were extremely positive.
Admission: $5.00.
Location: Cinema Paradiso is located at 503 SE 6
Street, downtown Fort Lauderdale on the South Bank of
the New River, just East of Broward County Courthouse.
Parking is free in the Courthouse parking garage.
