Currently, ‘3’ customers can subscribe to their mobile broadband pay-as-you-go service after buying a USB dongle for £69.99. Top ups can then be purchased for 1GB allowance per month for £10, 3GB for £15 or 7GB for £25.
The encouraging mobile broadband dongle sales are now so extreme that Vodafone retail staff have revealed the company is struggling to cope with customer demand, often leaving stores fresh out of kit. One local Vodafone branch commented that their dongle sales had increased from around five per month to fifty per month.
Increased sales correlate with Vodafone’s improved marketing campaign for its mobile broadband service. The ISP has recently introduced a £15-per-month deal for new customers. To cope with the huge demand Vodafone has hired an extra 450 frontline staff to fill national their national stores.
The past month’s increased activity in the mobile broadband industry has certainly caught the attention of business specialists and researchers alike. A report by Arthur D Little and Exane BNP Paribas released earlier in the week suggested that half of all consumers in Europe will have mobile broadband access by 2012.
Stephanie Rogers from Mobile Broadband Genie gave her advice on how to avoid a wasted journey travelling to an out-of-stock high street store: “Just like shopping online for your home goods and luxuries, your Mobile Broadband subscription can easily be ordered through your chosen service provider’s website. This has two advantages – first of all, you can have peace of mind that you will able to order your package and dongle without being told it’s ‘out of stock’, but it’s also a great way to quickly browse through your options and compare prices and download limits before you buy.”
