UK authorities use number plate reading technology to catch criminals, as technology advances it is getting more difficult for criminals to use the roads. Their vehicle number plate is the gateway for agencies to check up on the vehicle and the person driving it.
More and more joint operations are being mounted nationwide by the Police, DVLA, HM Customs and Excise, the Environment Agency and even the Immigration service, and any vehicle stopped can expect to be thoroughly checked over and the driver’s details will also be investigated. This means that anyone who is wanted by any police force or another agency has little chance of getting away with it.
Chief Insp Ian Copus said: "Generally drivers have been very supportive of the operation and some have even thanked us for being stopped.
"With the new technology we can make sure that there is a reason to stop people, even if that reason is a minor one.
"This is a good use of resources and is very effective in dealing with criminality."
Supt Tony Godwin, Head of Operations for Gloucestershire Police said: "This is unprecedented in bringing together police forces.
"We can flag up a driver here who may have an offence in Manchester, for example, and pass that data on to them.
"With the increases in technology we are making it harder and harder for the criminals."
In addition to the technology already mentioned, there is a new system being tested which could prevent a terrorist attack, the Ion Track Itemiser can detect explosives!
