Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-Texas) in an interview last week went on record claiming that the job of Vice President is “not something she wants.” Hillary Clinton doesn’t want the job, neither does Barack Obama, Mike Huckabee, or Mitt Romney. Florida Governor Charlie Crist may want the job, but he is playing it coy. Asks Grassey, “What are they, stupid? This is the best job in the United States.”
In an article on her blog, www.barbaragrassey.com, Grassey extols the benefits of being Vice President, including flying as Air Force Two, attending state dinners and living at the Naval Observatory. She also notes that the medical benefits and retirement plan are outstanding. “All that for breaking a tie in the Senate from time to time. How sweet can this job be?”
“The beautiful thing about being Vice President is that nobody really cares who you are or what you are doing. I mean, sure, the President doesn’t want you to be too ambitious, but you could probably go shopping on Fifth Avenue and no one would recognize you. Best of all, nobody shoots at the Vice President. On rare occasion, the Vice President may take a shot at someone, but if you are the Vice President, you can pretty much get away with it by apologizing and sending a bottle of good Scotch.”
A registered Independent, Grassey is open to offers from any and all nominees. “At national levels, it doesn’t matter if you are a Republican or Democrat. The game becomes politicians vs. the people. I am all about joining the winning team.” And she makes two promises to that lucky nominee: First, she won’t be bucking for the number one job. “Seriously, this country won’t be ready for a female president for at least another fifty to a hundred years.” Her second promise is that she will pretend to be paying attention during every State of the Union address. Unless of course she decides to opt for the traditional Vice Presidential nap. Grassey ranks her chances for making the Vice Presidential cut as somewhere above that of former New York Governor Eliot Spitzer.
