It was after a painful episode in her family life that Doris found inspiration to create her book of poetry, which she filled with words on her closeness with God, spirituality, autism awareness, her inspirations, positive thinking, social issues in our world and greetings. Doris found peace and healing through her poetry.
She also found a publishing partner in Xlibris and in 2004 decided to have her book of poems self-published. With the release of A Blessing, Caring & Sharing, Doris found herself in a path that has led her from one form of success to another.
From touching people’s lives on an intimate level with her words to creating statewide awareness for autism, Doris found that her book has opened many doors for her to bless and inspire people. Her book and her poetry have also taken her on readings at nursing homes and residential home facilities, churches, and in the community.
Doris continues to do numerous book signings across the country, where she gets to meet and interact with people who have been touched by her poems. In fact, she has the most number of book signings among the roster of Xlibris published authors.

Doris Washington is a spiritual writer, author, poet, and disability advocate who resides in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania with her husband and son John. An unfortunate incident involving her 18-year-old son with autism and two police officers in December 1993 became the inspiration for her poetry. She has written over 450 poems.
In 1997, she wrote her first poem Invisible. She has two poetry CDs: A Blessing, Caring & Sharing, and They Are Someone’s Child. She writes poems about her closeness with God, spirituality, autism awareness, inspirations, positive thinking, social issues in our world, and greetings. She is an entrepreneur of DORIS’POEMS.
