Mar 17, 2008 – WomenOnGuard.com donated products to STAR, a 24-hour crisis intervention program that assists sexual assault victims and their families. The staff has qualified master’s level counselors who help victims recover from their traumatic experience by providing individual counseling and emotional support. STAR also provides in-house forensic sexual assault exams.
WomenOnGuard.com is an e-commerce website that sells non-lethal self-defense products such as Mace, pepper spray, stun guns, the taser C2, personal alarms and home protection products. The site includes hotlines, safety tips, helpful links and a blog. This website, which was started in 2006, is targeted toward women by encouraging them to purchase non-lethal self-defense products instead of deadly weapons. Since women are more often the victims of violent crime, the website also donates 25 products on a monthly basis to a different women’s crisis center around the country.
Shirley Jones, Program Director of STAR, informed WomenOnGuard.com during a phone conversation, that in April they were having an event called “Take Back The Night”. This event is held annually during the month of April which is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. The purpose of this rally and candlelight vigil is to bring community members together to raise awareness about sexual assault and take a stand against this horrendous crime! STAR will plan and host several activities during the month of April. One activity will include providing self-defense classes for women. The event will include pepper spray giveaways donated by WomenOnGuard.com.
“We want to point out that March is Women’s History Month”, says Martha Z. Martinez, Co-Owner of WomenOnGuard.com. She goes on to state, “We should especially acknowledge the fact that there is a problem in this country as well as in other countries regarding women being abused, raped or even killed in epidemic proportions. This is in fact why crisis centers such as STAR exist”. She also mentions that women should take their personal safety into their own hands instead of always relying on law enforcement or male figures in their life. Martha says, “Unfortunately most women are physically weaker than men, so they need to carry a self-defense product for their own protection”. One of the most important aspects about the WomenOnGuard.com website is that it sells only non-lethal products to empower women. Susan Eaton, Co-Owner of the website, mentions; “We don’t want to add to crime, we want to prevent it and by using non-lethal means, we avoid having casualties in our society.”
