Los Angeles- Master Gardener, Lee O’Hara star of the instructional film, “Organic Gardening  Made Easy” now available on DVD (http://organichomegardener.com) gives his top ten list for a great Earth Day celebration.  O’Hara sits in his suburban Glassell Park, California garden;  a garden that was designed by him and where he grows organic vegetables and flowers all year long. Over the past 24 years Lee O’Hara has turned his front and back yards into raised planting beds.  At first, it was just with the intention of creating retaining walls, but that soon escalated into growing vegetables organically.

The term “Organic”, in farming or gardening, means using fertilizers and pest controls that come only from plants and animals. The overarching goal of organic farming is defined as follows:  "The role of organic agriculture, whether in farming, processing, distribution, or consumption, is to sustain and enhance the health of ecosystems and organisms from the smallest in the soil to human beings."
—International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movement (IFOAM) - The Principles of Organic Agriculture - Principle of health

On April 22, there will be Earth Day celebrations all over the United States.  Master Gardener Lee O’Hara gives us simple and easy ways to honor Mother Earth:

“There is an undercut to be environmentally aware”  he says, “And that is to take a moment and sit outside and observe nature. “ I have an enormously good time, having a cup of coffee on the patio, watching the falcons, red tail hawks, mocking birds, finches and hummingbirds.  And the blue jays come to have their morning peanuts from my hand every morning at 6:45.

What if there is no time and you live in an apartment where there is no place to grow a garden?

“Buy organic vegetables, when possible, avoid the use of any kinds of chemicals in any and all products.  There are better all-natural household products for any and all household needs.  They're easy to find on the internet, will save people a lot of money, improve your health, and be a big help to the environment.  Use no chemicals.  There are organic solutions to any and every yard problem anyone might have.  Using chemicals of any kind creates more problems than one is trying to solve.

O’Hara gives these final suggestions for a perfect Earth Day Celebration: “Don't drive any more than necessary, enjoy the day with family and friends in the backyard. Plant some flowers that will do well in the location you have available. Try to live through the day without the computer or the TV and observe the nature all around you.

Lee O’Hara’s Top Ten List to celebrate Earth Day:
