Scientific Community Forms Society to Give Public Access to Unambiguous Research on Nutrition.

Respected group of medical researchers have decided to bring the findings of formal scientific research to this important area of nutrition - Carbohydrate Restricted Diet.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PR Log (Press Release)Mar 12, 2008 – New York, NY:  The Metabolism Society (formerly Nutrition & Metabolism Society) launches campaign to give public access to scientific discoveries in a grand effort to educate on current research findings in the field of nutrition and metabolism, with an emphasis on the science related to carbohydrate restricted diets. The Society provides current science through the Nutrition and Metabolism journal, an annual conference for researchers and doctors and, a newly revamped website that provides a wealth of resources for consumers and professionals (nmsociety.org)

The Nutrition and Metabolism Society and the journal Nutrition & Metabolism have particular scientific interests in lipid metabolism and effect of macronutrient composition of the diet. The Society’s emphasis is on how carbohydrate restriction impacts diabetes, cancer, lipids, weight management, energy balance, and exercise. The Metabolism Society is not an advocacy group and does not make dietary recommendations. The metabolic rationale of low carbohydrate diets is, however, a springboard for the study of various aspects of biomedical science. The purpose of the campaign is to eliminate confusion and create a global awareness of new information regarding carbohydrate restricted diets and health.
The Metabolism Society will be holding a 2 day Seminar at the American Society of Bariatric Physicians Conference in Phoenix, AZ onApril 12th and 13th, 2008
The symposium will summarize and critically evaluate the evidence supporting
the relationship between dietary saturated fat and heart disease.
The first set of speakers will review the scientific evidence regarding dietary
saturated fats and heart disease, present new science regarding carbohydrate
restriction and cardiac risk, and review the role of saturated fats for human
function.  These lectures will be of interest to people seeking  the latest scientific
information on the implementation of carbohydrate restriction in clinical practice.
The second set of speakers will present points of view bearing on clinical
applications and themes from Gary Taubes's controversial new book,
Good Calories, Bad Calories.  This will be followed by a panel discussion with
Gary Taubes and presenters.

Metabolism Society scientific board members include some of the most prestigious nutrition and metabolism researchers of today. Board members include Eric C. Westman, MD MHS, Associate Professor of Medicine and Director of the Lifestyle Medicine Clinic at Duke University Health System; Jeff Volek, PhD RD, Associate Professor and exercise and nutrition researcher at the University of Connecticut; Richard Feinman, PhD, Professor of Biochemistry at Downstate Medical Center, nutrition and metabolism researcher (SUNY), New York; Gil Wilshire, MD FACOG, Reproductive Endocrinologist, diabetes and metabolism research expert, Mid-Missouri Reproductive Medicine & Surgery and N. J. Robillard, PhD with post doctoral training at Tufts University, Department of Molecular Biology under famed researcher Michael Malamy, Author and Founder of The Digestive Health Institute in MA and  Dr. Jay Wortman, a Métis physician with the First Nations and Inuit health branch of Health Canada.

The open access journal Nutrition and Metabolism, was founded by Dr. R. Feinman, who serves as co-editor in chief. The journal provides access to scientific research on macronutrients and their effects on the body and disease. NMS encourages people to educate themselves so that they can confidently evaluate their options rather than relying on the conflicting information received from health organizations, government agencies or the latest best selling diet book. The consumer friendly website provides the public with useful information and separates fact from fiction in the highly controversial and tirelessly debated subject of low carb diets.

According to Dr. Feinman, the society emerged due to “concerns about the direction of scientific and clinical attack on the epidemic of obesity and diabetes have drifted away from solid science and established orthodoxy that has limited success and is not truly accountable.  In particular, the insistence on only a single nutritional approach, low fat, that has a very poor track record, and reliance on pharmaceutical methods has, in my view, exacerbated the epidemic. Whereas my professional concern is in the detriment to science, education and well-being of many Americans, I believe the government is spending far more on treatments in this area than is necessary.

The Nutrition & Metabolism Society is a 501(c)(3) charitable and educational organization depending on financial support of members and sponsors who help us to carry out work as the leading advocate for the scientific study of nutrition and metabolism. 100% of donations are used directly for research. The Metabolism Society is a 501(c)3 nonprofit health organization providing research, information and education in the application of fundamental science to nutrition. The Society is particularly dedicated to the incorporation of biochemical metabolism to problems of obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

To fulfill this mission, the Metabolism Society hosts research conferences, publishes scientific findings, provides educational information and publishes an open-access on-line journal Nutrition and Metabolism. In association with the American Society of Bariatric Physicians, the Metabolism Society hosts scientific conferences on the nutritional and biochemical aspects of carbohydrate restriction. While not advocating any specific dietary strategy, the Society believes that the therapeutic potential of low-carbohydrate diets for the treatment of obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease is under-investigated and under-utilized.
