The Nutrition and Metabolism Society and the journal Nutrition & Metabolism have particular scientific interests in lipid metabolism and effect of macronutrient composition of the diet. The Society’s emphasis is on how carbohydrate restriction impacts diabetes, cancer, lipids, weight management, energy balance, and exercise. The Metabolism Society is not an advocacy group and does not make dietary recommendations. The metabolic rationale of low carbohydrate diets is, however, a springboard for the study of various aspects of biomedical science. The purpose of the campaign is to eliminate confusion and create a global awareness of new information regarding carbohydrate restricted diets and health.
The Metabolism Society will be holding a 2 day Seminar at the American Society of Bariatric Physicians Conference in Phoenix, AZ onApril 12th and 13th, 2008
The symposium will summarize and critically evaluate the evidence supporting
the relationship between dietary saturated fat and heart disease.
The first set of speakers will review the scientific evidence regarding dietary
saturated fats and heart disease, present new science regarding carbohydrate
restriction and cardiac risk, and review the role of saturated fats for human
function. These lectures will be of interest to people seeking the latest scientific
information on the implementation of carbohydrate restriction in clinical practice.
The second set of speakers will present points of view bearing on clinical
applications and themes from Gary Taubes's controversial new book,
Good Calories, Bad Calories. This will be followed by a panel discussion with
Gary Taubes and presenters.
Metabolism Society scientific board members include some of the most prestigious nutrition and metabolism researchers of today. Board members include Eric C. Westman, MD MHS, Associate Professor of Medicine and Director of the Lifestyle Medicine Clinic at Duke University Health System; Jeff Volek, PhD RD, Associate Professor and exercise and nutrition researcher at the University of Connecticut;
The open access journal Nutrition and Metabolism, was founded by Dr. R. Feinman, who serves as co-editor in chief. The journal provides access to scientific research on macronutrients and their effects on the body and disease. NMS encourages people to educate themselves so that they can confidently evaluate their options rather than relying on the conflicting information received from health organizations, government agencies or the latest best selling diet book. The consumer friendly website provides the public with useful information and separates fact from fiction in the highly controversial and tirelessly debated subject of low carb diets.
According to Dr. Feinman, the society emerged due to “concerns about the direction of scientific and clinical attack on the epidemic of obesity and diabetes have drifted away from solid science and established orthodoxy that has limited success and is not truly accountable. In particular, the insistence on only a single nutritional approach, low fat, that has a very poor track record, and reliance on pharmaceutical methods has, in my view, exacerbated the epidemic. Whereas my professional concern is in the detriment to science, education and well-being of many Americans, I believe the government is spending far more on treatments in this area than is necessary.
The Nutrition & Metabolism Society is a 501(c)(3) charitable and educational organization depending on financial support of members and sponsors who help us to carry out work as the leading advocate for the scientific study of nutrition and metabolism. 100% of donations are used directly for research.
