Reducing Your Nerves before Your Driving Test

When you are nervous your mouth goes dry, your hands start to sweat and your stomach is doing flip flops. These are all classic signs, and it’s not surprising that most of us experience some of them before we take our driving test.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PRLog (Press Release)Mar 12, 2008 – There are lots of people who are competent drivers, but fail their practical test due to getting nervous and not being able to control those feelings before and during the test itself.  Fortunately there are some simple but effective ways that you can reduce your nerves and stand an even better chance of passing with flying colours the first time around.

Believe it or not, your instructor also has a role to play in how you feel before your driving test.  It’s important that you get on well with your instructor, and if you tend to get particularly nervous you should tell them this.  Driving instructors are experienced in helping pupils of all ages and no one flies through their test with no nerves at all.  They may be able to suggest strategies for dealing with nerves that have worked well for others.  Simply having an instructor who is supportive and understanding can work wonders.

As the day of your driving test approaches, it’s common to start feeling a little nervous.  Try and be aware of how you are feeling so that you can use calming techniques before the nerves get out of control.  Prepare as much as you can by taking extra lessons and practising any kind of manoeuvre that you are dreading.

It’s also a good idea to take a mock test a week or so before the real thing, as it will give you an idea of what to expect on the day.  Quite often nerves occur as a result of dreading the unknown.  Your driving instructor will be able to dispel some of your fears by taking you through a practice run.

Of course, your test day will soon arrive and you will need to know what to do to make things easier for yourself.  Every time you feel the nerves starting to take hold, take in a deep breath and consciously relax all your muscles to let go of the tension.  Think positive thoughts – in fact, talking to yourself in your mind will help you to stay calm and logical about every part of your driving test.

Perhaps the most important piece of advice to remember is not to rush.  It’s only natural that you want to get the test over with as quickly as possible, but you also want to pass.  So long as it is safe to do so, there is no harm in taking an extra second or two to compose yourself before moving off, and it can make all the difference in keeping those nerves at bay.

Finally, remember that the examiner is not trying to trick you in any way.  They are there to see whether or not you are capable of driving a car.  If you keep those positive thoughts at the forefront of your mind, you could well be celebrating sooner than you think!

F1 Driving School have very patient and friendly instructors and we specialise in those nervous pupils.
