During the 1970’s, Bell worked the national coffee house circuit, and his songwriting drew favorable comparisons to such artists as Randy Newman and Tom Waits. In 1982, he was in the studio recording his songs with Stevie Ray Vaughan and Eric Johnson when a drunk driver broadsided his car one night after a music session. Thrown more than 60 feet, Bell suffered extensive injuries that included a severe traumatic brain injury. Awaking from a coma one month later, Bell embarked on a decade-long journey as he reclaimed his identity and his music.
“I realized early on as well that they probably kicked down the right guy, because I wouldn’t stand for it,” Bell tells Kagan. “I would get up off the mat, and I’d find a way, or I would perish. This is just who I am.”
With the help of legendary producer Bob Neuwirth and numerous musical friends, Bell successfully launched his second comeback with the critically acclaimed CD’s Phoenix and Recado. Bell has also written two books, and his songs have been performed and recorded by such diverse performers as Little Feat, Lyle Lovett and Nanci Griffith, among others.
