Groupama is the largest mutual insurer and a leading non-life, personal health, agricultural and local authority insurer based in France. The company is the world's third largest property and casualty mutual. It is the second largest marine and transport insurer, the third largest mortar and SME insurer and the leading life insurers in France.
Groupama has presence in nine countries and is expanding within buoyant markets in Eastern and Southern Europe, as well as in Asia. It's premium income in international operations was E2.4 billion in 2006, as compared with E1.9 billion in 2004 contributed E157 million to net profit in 2006, whereas it showed a loss of E124 million in 2001.
Groupama's profitability is one of the lowest in the industry. It's operating profit margin rose to 6.7% in 2006 from 0.1% in 2002. While its competitors such as AXA (7.5%), AEGON (7%) and Zurich Financial Services (10.4%) recorded higher operating margins in 2006. It's low profitability makes it less attractive for equity and debt investors
